Day- long fast by Congress party workers today was organized throughout the country in protest against the atrocities on Dalits and minorities by the present regime. “Communal harmony & brotherhood is under threat in Modi govt, they want to divide the society, hence it is the duty of Congress party to fight against such powers & this is what we have come together for”said the Congress spokesperson, RS Surjewala on country-wide Congress protest.

Rahul Gandhi joins protest in Rajghat

Congress President Rahul Gandhi joined senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sheila Dikshit, Ashok Gehlot and Ajay Maken at Rajghat in a hunger strike over atrocities on Dalits, especially the violence against Dalits in the BJP –ruled states on Bharat bandh on April 2nd, earlier this month.

Communal harmony under threat in BJP government”

“Peace and harmony has been embodied in the soul of this country and the responsibility to uphold it lies with the Congress,” the party said in the statement. Targetting the BJP government, the party said, “Clearly BJP ruled Centre and state governments didn’t initiate any steps to curb the violence neither to protect the fraternity, therefore it becomes even more important for the Congress to lead the nation in tough time.”

BJP calls Congress protest a “drama”

Meanwhile the ruling party did everything it could to discredit the protest by Congress and even circulated pictures of Congress leaders “feasting before the fast”, as they put it.

The BJP has decided to observe a fast on April 12th.
