A fire that was waiting to happen engulfed the two-storey firecracker factory in Bawana Industrial Area, Delhi, on Saturday, January 20th 2018, a storage unit that had flouted all fire safety rules, had a single exit door, whose owner had not even cared to obtain a No objection certificate from the Fire department.

“Ideally, there should be smoke detectors, alarms and water sprinklers in every floor of the building, including the basement,” Additional Director of Delhi Fire Service Atul Garg said. “But none of it was there in the said building.”

Seventeen workers died in the fire and the politicians were again doing what they routinely do- pay lip service and send condolences and finally blame each other. The owner was arrested but how long is it for the factory to restart and poor work there in similar conditions?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives. May those who are injured recover quickly.” The BJP leader and North Delhi Mayor Preeti Aggarwal on Sunday triggered a controversy after she was caught on camera asking officials not to talk about the firecracker factory fire. “Iss factory ki licence humare paas hai, isliye kuch nai bolna.”

AAP chief Kejriwal, who visited the site late last night said the truth will come out only after the enquiry, which has been ordered by the government.A compensation of Rs 5 lakh each will be given to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives and Rs 1 lakh each to the two injured persons, he told reporters.
